DAY 1: Hiccups and brain cells

And so it begins…

I’m a Scientist June 2013 has got off to a busy start. Across all zones we’ve had around 30 live chats, a few thousand questions asked outside of the chats, and there are now 3,300 students registered!

Today’s highlights in the Cells Zone:

  • Mario tells us how to cure hiccups:

marioruiz : Or the one asking if any of us is doing research on hiccups. Haha, I’ve just told me a trick I had to make it disappear: just drink a glass of water from the opposite edge you normally drink from. It gives you an awkward position that contracts the muscles in the abdomen and make the hiccup stop… I suppose!

  • And rosa59 asks about brain cells:

rosa59 : when is the average person got the most brain cells?

marioruiz : When we are born our brain is almost developed, and even when some cells inside the brain grow during our entire life, my answer is that in the first years of life we have more brain cells than any other time
