I volunteer to help raise money when I do my running. We’ve raised money for our local school and for one of our running club friends who had a bike crash that left him in a wheelchair. I also volunteer as a school governor.

We are also just in the process of re-doing parts of our house and the furniture we don’t need will be collected and sold by the British Heart Foundation, to support their work.

It is surprising how many charities fund science – and they spend a lot of money on it too! I don’t know where we’d be if people didn’t help to collect cash for charity.

Great question! I have done lots of events for charity in the past. My passion for raising money for charities started at school when I became a charity rep for my class. Since school, I have run 1, 3 and 6 miles for Sport Relief. I came to work dressed as a clown for the day for Comic Relief and last year I teamed up with another PhD student and we were sponsored to come to work for the day dressed as a dog (me) and a chicken (my friend) for Children in Need. I love dressing up and looking ridiculous for charity because, not only does it raise lots of money but it always puts a smile on peoples faces! 😀

I definitely do! Cancer Research UK funded me through my PhD and so I did lots of fundraising for them. I did a 26-mile Shine night-time walk through Manchester and I marshalled at a lot of Race For Life and 10km race events. It’s great fun to volunteer for these events but it can also be very upsetting meeting people whose relatives have died of cancer.
