Great question. And the bizarre thing is that I am answering this late in the day (11.15pm) with a glass of wine at my side. It is making me think!
Alcohol affects lots of parts of your body. I would guess it affects your brain and nervous system first. But this biggest concern is what damage it does. It is capable of causing lots of changes in your body function: liver, pancreas, immune system, heart. All of these changes can lead to serious and life-threatening problems.
Drinking a lot in one go (binge drinking) is really dangerous but so is drinking over a long period. Best to keep your intake down.
One of the big changes is where your liver gets ‘fatty’ and this can be the start of changes that lead to fibrosis (scarring) in your liver – this means it doesn’t do its proper job any more. That’s life threatening.
