We have two types of cells in our eyes, they are called ‘rods’ and ‘cones’. Rods are in charge of detecting the intensity of light, and ‘cones’ detect colours. In the case of dogs, they don’t have cones for most of the colours, except for black and white. But other animals can see colours that we can’t! For example, spiders and some insects can see ultraviolet or UV, a type of light that we are unable to detect (but can cause us harm, as you may know!).
