That is an excellent question! My research involves looking at a cell type and tissue that is ‘highly conserved across species’. This means that the tissue I am looking at is really similar in different species, including dogs, horses and humans. In fact those three species can all suffer from osteoarthritis, which is a very painful disease of the joints. I hope by understanding how dog chondrocytes behave, this will help us understand how these cells behave in other animals and this may lead to possible treatments for joint disease in dogs and other species including humans!
